The Curriculum

Kids -R- Us Child Development Center, Inc. uses the HighScope researched based and child focused curriculum for all of its Early Childhood Programs. The curriculum has been carefully designed to promote independent and creative thinking, decision making, and problem solving in children from birth through kindergarten. The HighScope Curriculum focuses on creating engaging classrooms and routines that encourage adult-child interactions and support children’s play with a variety of learning opportunities.

Our learning occurs in our play-based classrooms or outdoor playground. Children and Teachers work together to develop children’s knowledge and skills in problem solving, decision making, and dependence, and to promote their sense of curiosity, persistence, and creativity.

Our teachers apply intentional teaching methods that engage young children based on their level of interest and development. This approach to teaching takes the learning process beyond traditional academic subjects, while preparing children for later schooling and future success in life. This child-focused approach to early education achieves powerful, positive results.

Infants/Toddlers (6 weeks to 30 months)

Our Infant-Toddler Curriculum uses a carefully designed process of learning through discovery called active participatory learning. During active learning, infants and toddlers learn about the world around them by exploring and playing. HighScope’s child-centered approach supports active exploration of the physical environment and provides a routine that is consistent enough to create a warm, reassuring setting, and flexible enough to respond to children’s individual needs and interests.

Through continuity of care and supportive adult-child interactions, children establish strong attachments to a primary caregiver. Caregivers respond to individual needs and temperaments, play with children at their own physical and developmental level.

Caregivers, in partnership with parents, create consistent yet flexible daily schedules and caregiving routines based on children’s biological rhythms, to create an environment in which children feel loved and secure.

We have created a comfortable and stimulating sensory-motor learning environment. Teachers arrange and equip the classroom setting with ample space and diverse, open-ended materials for infants and toddlers to wiggle, roll, crawl, cruise, balance, toddle, walk, and climb.

Teacher’s record objective child anecdotes throughout the day, use these notes to make daily plans, and share information with families to extend children’s learning at home.

Pre-start to Preschoolers (30 months to age 5)

Our Preschool Curriculum is based on the principles of active learning and support of a child's positive interactions with adults and peers. The HighScope method creates an environment in which children actively learn by following the plan-do-review sequence:

These plans help to promote resourcefulness and independence of children. Our preschoolers participate in a variety of daily activities:

Our classroom allows for growth of your child in all areas including academic, social/emotional and physical to create a whole child approach to learning.

Preschoolers to Pre-K (ages 3 to age 6)

Our Preschool to Pre-KCurriculum focuses on academic and social development by covering the following content areas:

Letter sound (phonological) awareness, comprehension, print concepts and knowledge of the alphabet

Numbers, classification, ordering, number concepts, space and time

Problem-Solving Approach to Conflict Resolution enables children to solve problems with critical thinking and verbal skills

Our curriculum develops both fine and performing arts. Supporting young artists allows children to use various art media and appreciate the art approaches.

Our Daily Routine (Active Learning) is made up of a plan-do-review sequence and several additional elements. The plan-do-review sequence gives children opportunities to express intentions about their activities while keeping our teachers intimately involved in the whole process. The following five processes support the daily routine and contribute to its successful functioning:

Planning Time

The teacher talks with children about the plans they have made before the children carry them out. This helps children clarify their ideas and think about how to proceed. Talking with children about their plans provides an opportunity for the teacher to encourage and respond to each child’s ideas, to suggest way to strengthen the plans so they will be successful, and to understand and gauge each child’s level of development and thinking style.
Work Time

Cleanup Time

Recall Time

Teachers continually encourage and support children’s interests and involvement in activities that occur within our organized environment and provide a consistent routine. Teachers plan for key experiences that may broaden and strengthen children’s emerging abilities. Teachers apply intentional teaching practices by planning developmentally appropriate activities supporting and extending children’s learning providing materials that reflect children’s interests and home culture, actively engaging children through direct experiences in pursuit of shared learning goals.

School-age (ages 5 to age 10)

School-age Program is designed to engaged school-age children in a comfortable, yet stimulating child care environment.
